Seeing Stories about Domestic Violence in the News Can be Triggering

This week, northeast Ohio was rocked by media stories about two prominent, local citizens accused of and arrested for violence against women. While these incidents will ultimately play out in our legal system, we realize that seeing stories about domestic violence and/or child abuse in the news and on social media can be triggering.

Violence happens in every part of our society and every day. All victims’ experiences are important yet only a handful get highlighted in the media.

When people are in positions of power or have resources and influence over others, the record shows far too often that they are not held accountable.

The perception is that if someone is talented, famous, or powerful, behavior will be overlooked or dismissed. This has a chilling effect on hundreds of thousands of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking survivors everywhere. Many will hear “nobody will believe you, nobody will care, and what happened to you isn’t important” and will choose to remain silent.

If you need to talk, you are not alone. We are here to listen. Journey Center for Safety and Healing supports those impacted by domestic violence and child abuse. We believe victims.
