Tiffany's Story

I grew up in a warm, loving, financially comfortable family. So when my husband began hitting me, the shame I felt was overwhelming. I couldn’t bring myself to tell anyone. I had to call the police a couple of times, but I could tell they didn’t take me very seriously. They just treated me as a hysterical woman. I didn’t know where else to turn. A social worker friend told me about Shelter, but I kept putting it off.

Finally, one day the beating got so bad that I told myself I was out of options and reached out for help.

I still have a lot of work to do in therapy and preparing myself for finding a job. But it’s slowly getting better.

It’s slowly getting better.
